Honeymoon Registry - Your Honeymoon as Wedding Gift
Mar 22nd, 2008
We all know what a wedding registry is all about. Department stores allow engaged couples to manage the purchase of gifts for their wedding. The couple creates a list of items that they would like to receive, then let their friends know where they’ve registered. Guests interested in buying gifts can then consult that list and see which items that the couple needs and wants. No obligation to buy but if guests do they know they’re getting something the couple will value. Win-Win!
Instead of creating a wedding registry more and more couples these days are choosing for a honeymoon registry. The wedding gift list includes in this case honeymoon-related items. This can be anything from covering a part of hotel or airfare costs, a couples massage to champagne, excursions, a romantic dinner and much more. This way guests help the newlyweds have a truly incredible experience.
It’s possible when creating a honeymoon registry you need to pay an upfront fee and your guests may be charged a service charge or transaction fee when buying something from your registry. So before you join a honeymoon registry service ask what the costs will be for both you and your guests!
These charges cover the costs honeymoon registry services are making to get the best deals with tour operators, hotel chains and airlines.
Gifts run the gamut of everything imaginable. Unlike a wedding gift registry, though, the focus is on things and activities a couple will typically pay for on a honeymoon.
It may be something as common as a 2-night stay in a romantic hotel in Paris. Or, it could be a boat ride along the Seine River for the happy couple staying there. Honeymoon registry gifts can pay for one meal or all of them at the hotel. Some even pay for cocktails before dinner.
All these are great gifts. In many cases, the money isn’t fully paid for up front, though. A deposit might be registered, with the full amount only required if the couple actually uses the gift.
But that introduces a bit of fine print to watch out for. Registry policies, and those covering individual gifts, can vary widely. On some, the gift dollars never expire. If the couple doesn’t take advantage of the generous offer in, say, two years, the activity is still there if they should want to do so later.
Many others expire. When they expire, the money may be returned (minus a service fee) or the company may keep it entirely. There’s nothing fraudulent about the practice. It’s simply up to those registering to read the contract as they would any other and to make a decision accordingly.
While sometimes honeymoon registries may use higher prices compared to the prices at the hotel’s or airline’s online website, a honeymoon registry remains a convenient way to offer the new married couple a gift they will value!
